Easy How-To for Earring Making

When you’re in the market for a new pair of earrings, the thought of spending $20 on one pair can be a little hard to justify.  Instead of breaking your bank account open for the perfect pair of earrings to complete your outfit, why not create your own fabulous and unique earrings  for a fraction of the cost!

To create a stunning pair of do-it-yourself drop earrings, you will need 2 earring hooks and 2 headpins (you may want some extras around, just in case!). Both of these can be found in one of our starter packs. And of course, the star of the earrings, the beads! You will also need a few tools to craft your pair of masterpiece earrings: some wire cutters, needle nose pliers and some flat pliers. If you do not want to invest in all 3 tools then you could use our 3-in-1 tool.

1) The first step is to place your chosen beads onto the headpins. Keep in mind the weight of your beads – if you have too many glass beads they weight might be too much for your ears to hold!

2) Next you should take the needle nose pliers and hold the wire as close to the beads with possible (make sure the headpin is pointing down), and with your thumb bend the end of the headpin to a 90 degree angle.

3) Depending on the size of the loop you desire and the diameter of your needle nose pliers, you should cut the end of the headpin wire to your specifications. With the edge of the wire squeezed between the needle nose pliers, half turn the pliers to begin the loop. For a better grip, release the pliers and turn them back to the original position, and finish the loop with another half turn. If the loop still has a small gap, it’s okay, and can be completed later in the process.

At this point, you may want to take the flat pliers and straighten out the wire if needed to ensure that the earring is one straight line. If the loop is fully closed you need to reopen it slightly with the flat pliers. Hold the pliers on the end of the loop and bend it to the side slightly, just enough to allow the earring hook or earring post to slide onto the loop.

4) Once the hook or post is onto the loop, simply close the loop with the pliers and voila! You’re the proud designer, maker and owner of a new fabulous pair of earrings!
